El Turpial
Cota and El Turpial
I don't think any clean coffee has ever hit me as hard as El Turpial Coffee has. After a long phone conversation presenting each others projects, I received some samples from Emerson without much expectations like any other coffee. I first artisanely roasted the Laurina, Sudan Rume and the Sl28. I tried the Laurina right after the roast and ran to Pla knocking some furniture over in order to tell her the incredible news. I was holding the most unique coffee I ever cupped.
All these coffees were incredible hits, except the Etiopie which was just delicious, and the Yellow Bourbon which was probably just a nice clean cup + around 84. The next day I called Emerson and we officially initiated the start of an insane number of hour long conversations that would follow until today.
Who is El Turpial
Emerson Felipe Narvaez is a second generation farmer in his family farm. But we should say 1 and a half, because his whole family had to leave to family property for many years because of the conflict. Narino
I needed to buy everything I could even if it meant putting on hold new purchases from other farm. I needed to find a way to get my hands on his coffee for the sake of our business, but also of his. Despite being expensive I think Emerson's coffee is ridiculously undervalues. When I first bought the lot of SL28 I told him he gave me a 70% discount, because I would sell this coffee at a great price. And I promised I would share back the earnings once I get the fair price for the coffee. And I wasn't wrong, a few month later the coffee sold at auction for around 55 USD per kilo. The most exciting part is that this lot is not even that great compared to other smashing hits.
I decided to make it my mission to get as much money as possible as fast as possible to support Emerson to reach his rightful place as one of the best farms in Colombia. We are already getting preorders for next year's harvest in order to support the construction of a road to his farm so they don't have to carry bags of coffee on donkey or human backs. Also trying to support the purchase of new varieties and grow more coffees in new lands. Because the world need more El Turpial coffee.
